Anthro Reviews: Teacups & Feathers

I had to run a few errands near Anthropologie the other day so I popped in really quickly to see if they had any new arrivals. I was delighted when I spotted the new Sugar & Cream Dress! I LOVE the print and color. I didn't love it quite as much on me though. It's a bit too long but it's mostly the material that is the deterrent. Why can't it just be cotton or some other more casual and easy to clean material? It is a pretty dress but it will definitely have to go on sale before I consider it seriously.

Sorry for the headless pictures! I'm not very good at taking pictures in the dressing room.

The other item I tried on was the Shifting Feathers Dress. I had tried it on before in a medium but the top was too loose so this time I tried the small and liked it better. In fact I really like everything about this dress. The soft, stretchy material makes it so comfortable and the color & pattern is really nice. This is now near the top of my wishlist!

Is anyone doing anything fun this weekend? We leave for our trip to San Diego early tomorrow morning. I'll try to keep up with the blog while I'm away!

30 for 30 Challenge: Outfit 4

I love getting fashion inspiration from others so today I was excited to see Lori's outfit on Anthroholic's reader outfits feature. I have the same flower belt so I decided to wear it today and keeping with Lori's theme, I paired it with green. The 30 for 30 Challenge is going well so far! If you want to see how the other remixers are doing, check out the flickr group that Kendi set up.

Jefferson was really excited today for some reason when I was taking my outfit pictures, so I snapped this one of him too!

30 for 30 Challenge: Outfit 3

Today my outfit for Kendi's 30 for 30 Challenge was inspired by my friend Sara's outfit from yesterday (see her outfit at her blog Mommyland). I have the same Target cardigan so I put that on over my navy polka dot blouse and paired it with my neutral grey pencil skirt. Unfortunately I don't have a cool red belt (note to self: need to look for one of those soon) so I used a skinny striped ribbon belt that came with a dress.

Blouse: LOFT
Belt: from a dress
Skirt: Banana Republic
Sandals: Target

Before I go, I can't resist sharing this cute picture I took today of my boys. They are so happy to be back together again now that Bailey's surgery and vet visits are over. Bailey is also glad to be done with that cone around his head!

Book Review: The Daguerreotype

Besides sharing my outfits and favorites from Anthropologie, I've been planning to include some book reviews on this blog.

First up is a melancholy little book called The Daguerreotype by Patrick Gregory (published in 2004). I was just wandering through the library stacks and the title caught my eye. It's really fun to stumble upon lesser-known books and I'm glad I found this one because its slow-building, quiet little story appealed to my more pensive side. If you prefer action-packed adventure stories or neatly tied up conclusions, this book isn't for you. Due to my extensive research in nineteenth century literature as a grad student, I'm used to novels that lack a definite sense of closure and instead aim to leave the reader pondering, but I can see where a book like this would leave some people feeling unsatisfied since nothing momentous really happens in the story. I enjoyed it for the way it chronicled the life of the main character, and for how it meditated on the idea that although life isn't always as exciting as we would like it to be, it can still be meaningful even if we don't do something grand.

Set in the mid-nineteenth century, the story opens with a close-knit father and daughter poised to take divergent paths that would separate them at least for a year, and possibly forever. Elizabeth has just graduated from school and is preparing to spend a year in France enhancing her language skills and training for a teaching position that will be waiting for her at her old school when she returns to London. Her father has just been turned down for a position at the university in Edinburgh and has no hopes for gaining another position in England or Scotland, so he plans to accept an offer to go to America to give a lecture series and possibly gain a position at an American university.

However, this isn't the story that follows. Instead, Elizabeth decides to accompany her father to America and the novel traces her path in her new country. I liked Elizabeth and her story but I found myself identifying with her father, a struggling academic, at the beginning of the story since I'm also struggling with my dissertation and trying to make my way into academia. It would have been nice to get more of his story but the novel focuses primarily on Elizabeth. The book includes some interesting turns and spans about seventy years, taking the reader along on Elizabeth's journey through life, love, and tragedy. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction, coming of age stories, or just well-written realism with subtle irony and unexpected twists.

Here's one of my favorite quotes from the novel when Elizabeth ponders what it means to grow up:
"Elizabeth paused outside the front gate and peered through the grille. Though overwhelmingly familiar, the place seemed strangely transformed . . . It is all different, Elizabeth said to herself, because I am different, because I am seeing it with different eyes. Before, I was a student and belonged to the school in a way that a child belongs to a parent. Today I view it with the detached gaze of an adult. A great sadness welled up within her. If this is what it meant to be grown up -- to lose one's intimacy with the things of her past -- she was not sure that she was ready to relinquish her childhood. Yet as she pushed open the gate and entered the carriageway, she was overcome by a wholly new sensation in which longing mingled with melancholy, and added to her deep sense of loss an ineffable sweetness" (15).

If you liked this review, take a look at the one I did last month on Lev Grossman's The Magicians.

I'll post my OOTD later today! Have a great Wednesday!

30 for 30 Challenge: Outfits 1 & 2

Here are my first two outfits for Kendi's 30 for 30 Challenge.

First is a pretty simple outfit consisting of a casual black dress and white belt. This look was actually inspired by one of my favorite blogs, Academichic. A few months ago, S. did a post about experimenting with different belts over her black dress and she created so many cute looks -- check out that post here.

I loved her black and white look so I filed it away as an idea to try sometime. I got this white belt on sale last month and remembered this black dress in the back of my closet so I decided to try to recreate S.'s look. The stretchy jersey material of this dress makes it so comfy and I think the belt keeps it from looking too boxy and sloppy. Thanks for the inspiration S. and for creating such a cool blog!

The next outfit features a shirt that I love not just for the cute print but also because I got it on super clearance at Belk for $5.39!
